A friend of mine mentioned that she is feeling distant from the Lord. Her question was how can she revive her relationship with the Lord. Should she praise, fast, or what?? While considering what I'd answer to that question, I found that my heart pausing on
1 Corinthians 13:13 (KJV)
13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
This scripture is in the New Testament, so it's translation if from Greek. Let's look at Abide, Faith, Hope and Charity in Hebrew just for fun, comparing Hebrew words with the closest meaning to the Greek words in this verse.
First to Abide: The word abideth above is:
Greek Strong's Number: 3306—Greek Word: μένω
Transliteration: menō—
a primary verb; to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy) :- abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry (for), × thine own
The closest Hebrew meaning for this word Abideth that I could find is:
Hebrew Strong's Number: 3427 Hebrew Word: יָשַׁב
Transliteration: — yāshab
a primitive root; properly to sit down (specifically as judge, in ambush, in quiet); by implication to dwell, to remain; causative to settle, to marry :- (make to) abide (-ing), continue, (cause to, make to) dwell (-ing), ease self, endure, establish, × fail, habitation, haunt, (make to) inhabit (-ant), make to keep [house], lurking, × marry (-ing), (bring again to) place, remain, return, seat, set (-tle), (down-) sit (-down, still, -ting down, -ting [place] -uate), take, tarry.—Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary
Written out with word picture meanings it looks like this:
יָ Yood ~to work, make, a deed done
שַׁ Shin ~to devour, to consume, to destroy, something sharp
ב Bet ~a physical house or building, a body (house) of someone or something, family/household, Inside/within or amid.
What is neat is this word is connected to the word
Hebrew Strong's Number: 7673 Hebrew Word: שָׁבַת
Transliteration: shābat
שָׁ Shin ~to devour, consume, to destroy, something sharp
בַ Bet ~a physical house or building, a body (house) of someone or something, family/household, Inside/within or amid.
ת Tav ~Ownership, to seal, to make a covenant, to join two things together, to make a sign
I'd put shābat together this way:
To consume the home/person making covenant, sealing, and joining two things together. This is what the Lord desires of us when we rest in HIM. A time when we come away from business and be consumed by him within. Letting him cause all of who we are to rest and be at peace as He makes himself known to us and therefor he becomes a sign to others through us as He shines in us. Shabat is at times translated as Rest, it is also meant to be our day of rest.
So to come back to this word יָשַׁב or yāshab or abide
יָ Yood ~to work, make, a deed done
שַׁ Shin ~to devour, to consume, to destroy, something sharp
ב Bet ~a physical house or building, a body (house) of someone or something, family/household, Inside/within or amid.
This could be: The work of or completion of being consumed either in the home/person or within. Or To make consumed within. If we are abiding in the Lord then it's a blessing! If we are abiding in sin, it might be to make to devour/destroy the house/body/within. It is so important that we are taking every thought captive and chosing where we are abiding and what abides within us! :)
Now if you consider these scriptures it's pretty awesome!
John 12:46 (KJV) 46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
John 15:4 (KJV) 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
John 15:10 (KJV) 10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
I'll add to this in the following posts titled Faith, Hope, and Charity. :D
Blessings!
